‘Not As Described’ Is Quietly Destroying Your Brand Equity on Amazon & Walmart

3 min read

It’s universally understood that brand protection and ecommerce teams must proactively protect both the consumer buying experience and their valuable IP on Amazon and Walmart. Too often, big brands stay hyper-focused on stopping counterfeits only and assume that, because they are in Vendor Central, Amazon is policing their IP and that every consumer buying experience will be flawless.

That simply isn’t reality.

As anyone doing active marketplace monitoring and enforcement will tell you, there are many other forms of abuse that erode consumer trust and damage IP. IPSecure users, from within our platform, perform thousands of anonymous Amazon and Walmart product test purchases monthly, and one of the most frequent outcomes is “Not as Described.”

What is “Not as Described”? AKA “NasD.”

Not as Described, or as it’s more commonly known in the brand protection space, “NasD,” is a seemingly innocuous umbrella term used to describe a multitude of scenarios where a purchase is made and something other than exactly what was described on the product listing is delivered. It sounds simple. Or is it? Like most marketplace brand abuse, it’s not simple at all – and in many cases it’s not innocuous.

Why NasD Matters: Consumer Trust Breaks Fast

Consumers overwhelmingly trust Amazon. Surveys consistently show that 86–87%[1] of U.S. shoppers place high confidence in the platform, typically ranking it above newer competitors like Temu because of its security, convenience (fast or free shipping and easy returns), vast selection, and reliable refund process.

However, research also shows that when online orders go wrong, trust collapses quickly.

A recent Q3 2025 consumer experience study by last-mile logistics provider Bringg (bringg.com)[2] surveyed 1,000 U.S. online shoppers. The results were clear: 55% of shoppers said a single negative delivery experience would make them stop buying from that brand.

Consumers trust that Amazon and Walmart will fix their issue quickly. That is why more than $0.50 of every online dollar in the U.S. is spent there. But this rapid, customer-focused response will not save your brand. In the mind of the consumer, their negative experience is now connected directly to “buying your product on Amazon,” not to shopping on Amazon in general. They will still go back to Amazon for impulse buys, indulgences, and gifts – just not your product – ever again.
